These springs are important for the aid in function of a antique clocks strike train, hammer strike and other applications in clock repair. Showing a fairly simple operation for winding a spring I hope this will give some ideas for you and your clock repair techniques. At 1:37 in the video I mention a very helpful book written by Steven Conover about repairing striking clocks.
