We hope you enjoy watching the video for the full insight, or read about the stages below. Preparation in the Workshop…. The Oak Boards As with any project the preparation stages are very important to ensure the finish is of the highest quality. To begin, the oak boards were rough cut to oversize, with a good straight edge obtained on the table saw and then ripped to width. They were then cut to length, and surface planed to achieve a flat level base to put through the thicknesser. Sizing & Selection After the initial machining, the planks for the doors were marked to width for ripping. The remaining pieces forming the frames, ledges, architraves & doorstops. Once they were cut, selection was made for the order of placement, considering the continuity of grain, colour, and random widths of planks for each door. Frames & Architraves The frames were cut to length and jointed by cutting a housed stubbed tenon. They could then be fully constructed in the workshop ready for fitting on site. The architraves were bevelled and sharp edges removed with a shoulder plane which keeps a clean look while being tactile to the touch. The Finishing Details Back to the doors, the planks were spindle moulded to create the tongue & groove joints, and beading to both faces. After final sanding the edges were micro bevelled by hand with the shoulder plane, and Osmo Polyx oil applied to keep a natural tone to the oak. With all the preparation work completed, the doors were ready to be assembled. For a ledge & brace door, this generally takes between 2-3 hours. Working on Site……. Out with the old, in with the new The first job was to take off the existing doors and carefully remove the old frames. The new frames were packed & plumbed level, ready to receive the new doors. As each door was hung, the edges were hand planed in to obtain the correct gaps. Doorstops were then fitted, followed by the architraves. This can be quite time consuming in order to achieve a furniture grade appearance. Lastly, a final coat of oil applied, while checking everything over ready for the client.
