The GVSU Veterans History Project was established in 2006 to collect, record and archive oral history interviews and other materials relating to the experiences of military veterans of all eras, as well as of civilians and foreign nationals with stories relating to the American experience in wartime. We work in partnership with the Library of Congress Veterans History Project, and are one of a small number of archiving partners across the country. As an archiving partner, we post our interview videos and other materials on a website that is part of the Special Collections of the GVSU Library. Video Description
Mike Weaver was born in Fort Wayne, Indiana, in 1949. He enlisted in the Marine Corps in 1968. After training as an infantryman, he was sent to Vietnam in March 1969 and was assigned to G Company, 2nd Battalion, 7th Marine Regiment, 1st Infantry Division, mostly patrolling areas west and south of Da Nang. During the month of August 1969, his company worked in the Que Son region and took heavy losses, with only 7 of the original 70 members of the company still with the unit at the end of the month. Things quieted down after that, and he spent the last two months at the company headquarters, where his job was to process information on men killed in combat. He was sent home at the end of January 1970 at a time when his whole division was being withdrawn from Vietnam, and was discharged upon arrival in the US.
