Innerhalb von wenigen Jahrzehnten hat sich das Wort „Loft“ in unserem Sprachgebrauch eingebürgert. Während diese Wohnungsart in den 1980er-Jahren für viele noch eine weitentfernte Vorstellung und den Reichen aus New York vorbehalten war, sieht es heute anders aus. Die Loftbewegung gibt es mittlerweile in jeder Stadt, nicht nur in den Metropolen. Ursprünglich stammt die Idee aus dem New York der 1960er-Jahre. Im Viertel SoHo fingen einige mittellose Künstler an, sich in leerstehenden Industriegebäuden einzurichten und erfanden so, ohne es zu wissen, einen neuen Lifestyle.
