Good jobs, promotions, an 1,800 square foot home in Ohio. Then they decided they were done with the rat race. Louis retired at 55 after watching his father work until 65 and pass away two weeks later. Louis had always wanted to travel and see the country. So they sold nearly everything, downsized to a 240 square foot school bus, and hit the road full time. This is a complete tour of their DIY school bus conversion, built from scratch by Louis with input from Traci on every detail. The layout prioritizes comfort, storage, and off-grid capability for extended boondocking out west. LIVING ROOM The build starts with a 7-foot custom couch that Louis built and upholstered himself. It folds out into a bed for visiting grandkids. Storage underneath holds dry food, tools, and camera equipment. A sliding ottoman doubles as leg rest and storage. The entry door was relocated from the front to the middle of the bus so Traci can ride up front next to Louis while driving cross country. An EG4 mini split from Signature Solar heats and cools the entire bus on just 400 to 500 watts and runs while driving. KITCHEN The kitchen is positioned to leave maximum living room space. Louis built all the cabinets custom so storage could go exactly where it was needed. Every cabinet uses drawers instead of doors for better organization and capacity. The sink drawer wraps around the plumbing so no space is wasted underneath. They went with a full-size, deep, under-counter mount kitchen sink after watching other bus lifers complain about small sinks. The induction cooktop replaced an antique gas stove that rattled so badly they almost left it on the curb after one hour of driving. A combination microwave, air fryer, and oven handles about 90 percent of their cooking. Louis grills outside for the rest. A Berkey water filter provides clean drinking water on top of a two-stage filtration system that filters water as it enters the tank. The refrigerator was upgraded from a small RV unit to a full-size residential fridge after their first camping trip proved the original was too small. The kitchen triangle layout mirrors a traditional home: fridge, counter, and sink all within reach. SOLAR AND ELECTRICAL The entire bus runs on a Signature Solar and Victron system built for 30 to 60 days of off-grid living. Five EG4 server rack batteries at 100 amp hours each. Victron inverter and charge system. The system was intentionally oversized so it can eventually power a building on land when they settle down. Louis built the entire system as a DIY project with tech support from Signature Solar, who walked him through equipment selection, wiring, and setup. BATHROOM The bathroom is larger than most bus builds. Louis is 6 foot 5 and needed room in the shower. The shower pan sits between the wheel wells with a bench inside. A composting toilet vents through the roof with no odor. A corner sink keeps the bathroom independent from the kitchen so both can be used at the same time. The bathroom door doubles as a hallway door to save space. BEDROOM A queen-size bed with headboard storage and under-bed access to a 100-gallon fresh water tank. A 100-gallon waste tank sits under the bus between the frame rails. The setup supports roughly 14 days off-grid depending on shower usage. Louis is considering adding another 50-gallon tank for longer trips. The closet houses the hot water heater and clothing storage. WHAT THEY LEARNED Traci, a self-described introvert, says the biggest surprise of bus life has been the kindness of people on the road. Living full time in the bus changed his perspective on community and pushed her to put herself out there in ways he never expected. Their advice to anyone building: do not wait until everything is finished. Use cardboard boxes to mock up your layout before you build. Put in what you need and go.
