Written by OhioStateBuckeyes.com The No. 14/15 Ohio State women's basketball team (17-2, 7-1 B1G) prevailed against No. 10/8 TCU (18-2, 6-1 Big 12) on Monday in the second annual Coretta Scott King Classic inside the Prudential Center, winning by a 71-69 margin for its second top 10 win of the season. The Horned Frogs scored the final eight points of the opening quarter to hold an 18-8 lead after 10 minutes. The Buckeyes outscored TCU by a 25-18 margin, fueled by 14 points from Chance Gray, and trailed 36-33 going into the locker room. Ohio State took its first lead of the game during the third quarter but trailed 49-47 after TCU beat the buzzer to end the third quarter. The Buckeyes took the lead with seven points to open the fourth quarter and battled back after the Horned Frogs took the lead with 1:25 to play. Gray was the first in the game to reach double figures and finished with 22 points after shooting 6-of-8 from long range. Elsa Lemmilä (17) and Jaloni Cambridge (18) joined Gray in double figures. Lemmilä also recorded a career-high six blocks and a career-high five assists. J. Cambridge tied her career-high eight assists. Quarter-by-Quarter Recap Q1: TCU got onto the scoreboard first with a three-pointer before Kylee Kitts answered with a three-pointer of her own. The Horned Frogs scored the next seven points and took a 10-6 lead into the media timeout. The Buckeyes got within two but TCU scored the final eight points of the quarter, including a buzzer-beater, to take an 18-8 lead at the end of the quarter. Q2: Gray opened the quarter with back-to-back three-pointers to trim the Buckeyes' deficit to four at 18-14. TCU used a 6-1 run to extend its lead to 26-17 midway through the quarter. OSU responded with a 7-0 run to get within two at 26-24 on Gray's fourth triple of the game. The teams began trading points as the pace picked up. The Buckeyes closed the half with four free throws and trailed 36-33 at halftime. Q3: TCU scored the first three points of the second half before J. Cambridge got Ohio State on the board. Back-to-back layups from Lemmilä cut the Buckeyes deficit back to two points at 41-39 just past the midway point of the quarter. Ohio State strung together six unanswered points to take its first lead of the game at 45-44 on a Lemmilä layup. TCU beat the buzzer to take a 49-47 lead into the final quarter. Q4: Ohio State opened the fourth quarter with the first seven points to take a 54-49 lead with 8:42 to play. TCU tied the game at 54 after scoring the next five points in the game. The teams went basket for basket as the game was tied five times between 54 and 62. The Horned Frogs took their first lead since the beginning of the quarter at 66-65 with 1:25 to play. A pair of free throws from J. Cambridge put the Buckeyes back in front and Gray increased the lead to 70-66 with her sixth three-pointer of the game and 16 seconds on the game clock. The Horned Frogs banked in a triple to get within one but the Buckeyes held on for a 71-69 win. Game Notes This is the second annual Coretta Scott King Classic. This is the Buckeyes' fourth game of the season against a top 10 opponent and second top 10 win. Chance Gray was the first in the game to reach double figures, doing so early in the second quarter on her way to 22 total points. She shot 6-of-8 (.750) from behind the arc in her 13th double-figure performance of the season. Gray has scored 20 or more points in back-to-back games. Elsa Lemmilä totaled a career-high six blocks, career-high five assists and scored 17 points. This is her fifth double figure scoring game of the season. Jaloni Cambridge has scored in double figures in all 19 games this season. She finished the game with 18 points and tied her career-high eight assists.
