Nutrition doctor explains how food chaining can help your picky eater try new foods

VARIETY 101 (FREE COURSE playlist here👇) https://youtube.com/playlist?list=PLaleJGmG5SPmgtckNZiKOujHesCQ1w5Ei Key Points: • Food pairing is the practice of taking a familiar or safe food, and pairing it with an unfamiliar food to increase comfort and willingness to eat for your child • Food pairing: (1) add foods to their plate that are in the accept or enjoys category, and (2) mix an "enjoys" food with a "learning" food • There is no one correct speed or volume to introduce new foods to children or try food pairing. It is important to meet each kiddo where they are at and slowly work up from there! • Evaluate the common sensory factors between your child's enjoys, accepts, and learning foods • Only want to change ONE THING at a time. Especially for our kiddos who are extra sensitive to change and all things sensory. • Start with changing the aspect of food that your child is most comfortable with changes in (if possible). • These foods should be introduced to the child when they are hungry. • Implement these changes for everyone at the table. • Do not offer the original comfort food if a transitional food is rejected. Instead, try using some novelty techniques to help ease the introduction. (if your child only has ONE of VERY FEW comfort foods, do not try this would the guidance of a medical provider) Homework: • Identify the three foods that would be the most beneficial to your child or your family if your child introduced them. • Then… identify the best way to food chain to these foods. • Be patient with yourself and your kid, and have persistence!
