Oil Stick Basics Tips & Techniques

Curious about oil paint sticks? I've got you covered! What is the difference between an oil stick and an oil pastel? An oil stick contains pigment, wax, and a drying oil so it will dry just like oil paint but an oil pastel contains pigment, wax, and a non-drying oil so it will remain tacky. Oil paint sticks need to be used on a primed surface or it will rot the substrate but an oil pastel can be used on anything without damaging the substrate. How to use oil paint sticks: 1. Wipe or cut away the dry film from the stick. 2. Draw on a primed canvas or panel with the stick. 3. Fill in the areas with color. You can blend with your finger, a silicone tool, or a brush. 4. You can think out your paint with mineral; spirits or add slower drying glazes by mixing color from the stick with linseed oil or other oil painting mediums. 5. After the paint is fully cured you can varnish this just like any other oil painting. Tip: Storing your sticks in an airtight box will slow down the formation of the paint skin.
