We decided to downsize our lives, leave the traditional path behind, and pursue a life of flexibility. Today, we are showing you our unique solution to small-space living: two tiny houses connected to create one seamless, 610-square-foot dream home in Durango, Colorado. Tiny House Design and Innovative Layout Our primary residence is a 10x40 gooseneck tiny house on wheels. Designed for flow and accessibility, this home features an open-concept living area and kitchen. Unlike many tiny homes that feel cramped, we utilized vaulted ceilings to create an expansive, airy atmosphere. Inclusive Living Room: A cozy space with a custom couch featuring hidden storage, a fireplace, and views of the kitchen to keep the floor plan social. Full-Size Gourmet Kitchen: We refused to sacrifice luxury. Our kitchen boasts a full-size range, an 18-inch dishwasher, a deep single-basin sink, and a 6-foot refrigerator. Smart Storage Solutions: From an ottoman filled with shoes to pull-out totes under the sofa, every inch is maximized. The Master Bedroom Addition: Connecting Two Tiny Houses We have created something truly unconventional: connecting two tiny houses. As we plan to age in place, we added a 10x21 structure to accommodate a California King bed and a full walk-in closet. This addition transformed our living situation, providing a dedicated laundry room, a mudroom, and a large pantry. The Cost of Tiny Living in Durango Living tiny doesn't always mean "cheap," but it does mean high-end quality on a smaller scale. Construction Costs: Our first build was $175,000, and the addition was $60,000, totaling $235,000. Financing: We share the reality of tiny house loans, DMV registration fees ($5,000!), and the logistics of moving a structure 1,000 miles. Monthly Expenses: We pay $835 in space rent (including water, trash, and sewer) in a co-op community. Our electric bill stays incredibly low (under $50) thanks to R38 insulation and efficient mini-split systems. Outdoor Living and Lifestyle In Durango, the outdoors is our true living room. We built an extensive deck with multiple "zones" for entertaining. By selling 98% of our possessions, we found a sense of liberation that no material object could provide. We own less, but we see and do so much more.
