West of Main’s Downtown Darling project is a Dutch Revival in the heart of Canada’s capital, Ottawa. Nestled behind a beautiful park with blowing willows, this home built in 1910 is in a prime location within proximity of many local cafes and shops. Our clients had purchased it with the intention of transforming it into a home made for entertainment and hosting that reflected their artistic taste and passions. They then approached the West of Main design team to help bring their dream home to life! Through an intimate and thorough discovery process with the clients, WoM’s designers collected details on things they’re drawn to, how they would love to use their home, and lifestyle elements that are important to them (hobbies, interests, etc). The clients are a couple who are both creatives, are very social, and have children who have moved out, but come back to visit often. They wanted a home that felt personal, elevated, and refined with increased functionality and space optimization for hosting and everyday living. West of Main used this information to propose a design concept for a grand remodel that would treasure the character of their home while adding modern and customized elements such as updated finishes, smart home technologies, and handcrafted millwork. The remodel included gutting the kitchen and multiple bathrooms, refinishing original hardwood, updating with more modern finishes like light switches and trim, integrated speakers and smart home tech, and all new lighting, furniture and decor from West of Main Shoppe.
