California voters went to the polls and carried Governor Newsom's Proposition 50 to a resounding victory, redrawing the state's congressional maps ahead of the 2026 midterms. Speaker Emerita announced she would be retiring in 2027, bringing an end to a 40-year career in the House of Representatives. Senator Alex Padilla announced he planned NOT to run for California Governor, a race in which he was seen as a potential front-runner - that decision opening the floodgates of speculation that others, including Rep. Eric Swalwell, Tom Steyer, and Former Vice President Kamala Harris might decide to enter the race to succeed Newsom.
