PSSR 1 VS FSR 4 - The Definitive Comparison

According to Sony and AMD, PSSR is due for an update this year to be more in line with FSR 4, so I figured I'd do one final comparison video between the original version of PSSR and FSR 4. I specifically chose games that got PSSR updates in 2025, using recent versions of "PSSR 1" (AKA the version of PSSR that launched alongside PS5 Pro, before the 2026 update) so we could see this upscaler at its best VS its cousin on Radeon hardware. I tried to match the visual settings between the PC versions and the PS5 Pro versions of these games as best I could. I also tried to match both the input and output resolutions in all shots. If the PS5 Pro version of a game uses dynamic resolution scaling, then I locked the PC version to the lowest possible resolution of the PS5 Pro version, that way FSR 4 does not have any resolution advantages (for example, if a game dynamically scales between 1080p and 1440p for the input resolution on PS5 Pro, then I locked the PC version to a 1080p input resolution, or FSR 4 performance mode). Film grain, motion blur, depth of field, etc were all turned off in every shot. Everything you're seeing here comes down to the quality of the upscalers themselves (besides the clarity - see point 2 below). A couple things to note: 1 - FSR 4 is not officially supported in Control. I had to mod it in using OptiScaler. It works perfectly after the most recent game update - the glitch in the ray traced reflections in the hallway shot seems to happen whether or not I have FSR 4 enabled so it seems to be unrelated. In addition, Control on PS5 and PS5 Pro uses sub-native ray traced reflections while the PC version uses native resolution ray traced reflections. That results in the ray traced reflections being more unstable on PS5 Pro with no way to match this on PC. Therefore, the reflection stability/quality should be ignored in these shots - focus on everything else. 2 - I was using AMD Adrenalin to record the PC/FSR 4 footage, and using an AVerMedia GC553G2 for the PS5 Pro / PSSR footage. Both were set to record at 75Mbps, but unfortunately the AverMedia just can't get as crystal clear as AMD Adrenalin can. So the PS5 Pro footage will look blurrier. This video is not a test of clarity, but a test of stability. I wanted to show PSSR 1.0's issue with graininess (something I showed off in my previous PSSR VS FSR 4 breakdown video) and stability, something FSR 4 does not have an issue with. I can't wait to see what "PSSR 2.0" (AKA FSR 4 being back-ported to work on PS5 Pro's machine learning hardware) looks like. My PSSR VS FSR 4 videos just might be a preview of what to expect. I'm sure DigitalFoundry will make a fantastic video on the subject, showing PSSR 1.0 VS 2.0 and FSR 4. But if they don't...
