Ram Gopal Varma begins the conversation by revealing the original cast of ‘Rangeela’ — Sridevi, Nagarjuna and Rajinikanth. He also shares a rare connection between ‘Satya’ and ‘Rangeela’, inspired by his own college romance. RGV further talks about how the title ‘Rangeela’ was originally booked for a Mithun Chakraborty film. He recalls the night recordings with A.R. Rahman for the music of ‘Rangeela’, Rahman rejecting the initial tunes, and an awkward moment between him, Rahman and Asha Bhosle. He also narrates an incident where Rahman couldn’t compose a song, and RGV jokingly wanted to throw him out of the plane. RGV talks about how the music of ‘Rangeela’ wasn’t a hit at the time of its release, until a special promo helped turn things around. He discusses Aamir Khan’s restaurant scene with Urmila Matondkar, and the much-talked-about fallout between him and Aamir, which he believes was overhyped. RGV then moves to the making of ‘Shiva’, including the famous cycle-chase sequence, inspired by the film ‘Arjun’, and the iconic chain-breaking scene, influenced by a Bruce Lee movie. He talks about wanting to work with Madhuri Dixit in ‘Drohi’, eventually casting Urmila Matondkar because of her performance in ‘Narsimha’. RGV also mentions what he considers the worst film he has made, and yet how ‘Drohi’ remains his most successful film to date in certain aspects. He shares his experience working with R.D. Burman in ‘Drohi’, including a major mix-up involving credits between Pancham and M.M. Keeravani. He also talks about making the technically brilliant horror film ‘Raat’. RGV then discusses his shelved film ‘Nayak’, originally planned with Sanjay Dutt and Naseeruddin Shah, which eventually became the foundation for ‘Sarkar’.
