It emerged as a right-wing alternative to the Indian National Congress, advocating Hindutva ideology, cultural nationalism, and economic self-reliance. Initially supported by the Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh (RSS). In 1977, it merged with other opposition parties to form the Janata Party, opposing Indira Gandhi’s Emergency.
