The concept was first introduced in British India with the Poona Pact of 1932, which reserved seats in legislative bodies for SCs. Post-independence, the Indian Constitution, through Articles 15(4) and 16(4), institutionalized reservations in education, employment, and political representation to promote social justice and uplift historically oppressed communities.
