Royal Gems: A Heritage Unveiled - While many of Europe’s and Russia’s monarchies have either disappeared or now serve primarily ceremonial roles, their stunning jewelry endures, still worn by the remaining royal families. Royal Gems: A Heritage Unveiled (2013) Director: Anna von Lowzow Stars: David Bateson Genre: Documentary Language: English Synopsis: This is the story of a historic ruby parure, worn by Crown Princess Mary of Denmark and originally crafted for Napoleon’s coronation in 1804, a time when France dazzled the world with its splendor. First worn by Napoleon’s fiancée, Désirée, who later became Queen of Sweden, the parure journeyed through royal dynasties and reached Denmark in 1869 through Désirée’s great-granddaughter, Princess Lovisa. Crown Princess Mary revived this legacy by wearing the rubies at her 2004 wedding, linking her to centuries of royal power and legitimacy. Though many European monarchies have faded or now serve ceremonial roles, their extraordinary jewels remain, embodying visible signs of royal dignity and history. These gems, often worn at state visits and banquets, hold fascinating ties to pivotal moments in history, as told by members of the Danish and Swedish royal families. Similarly, the opulence of Russia’s Romanov dynasty, once epitomized by the dazzling jewels of Tsar Nicholas II’s court, vanished after the 1917 revolution, which claimed the lives and treasures of many Romanovs. Some jewels, like those of Grand Duchess Vladimir, were smuggled out of Russia and later worn by Queen Elizabeth II. Russia, once a major supplier of extraordinary jewels to the imperial family, saw many of these treasures sold during and after the revolution, often to support fleeing Grand Dukes or raise foreign currency for the communist regime. In 2008, a trove of Grand Duchess Vladimir’s Fabergé treasures was discovered in Sweden, adding yet another chapter to the hidden world of royal jewels.
