The long struggle between Ethiopia and Somalia for control over the Ogaden territory has recently intensified due to Soviet backing for the Ethiopians. In 1977, Somali-backed forces pushed the Ethiopians out of the Ogaden. But the Soviet Union has switched its support from Somalia to Ethiopia; giving the Addis Ababa regime the latest tanks, artillery and aircraft. This report examines the Ogaden struggle in the context of the vitally strategic Horn of Africa.
