Name: Elizabeth Lai (Ze), Omer + their pup Puffin https://www.instagram.com/silky.rabbit/ https://www.instagram.com/silky.lounge/ Location: Brooklyn, New York City Size: 920 sq ft / 85 sq m Type of Home: 2 bedroom apartment Years lived in: Since December 2024, owner “We moved to New York one and a half years ago from London, and originally we were thinking of only staying for a year or two before moving back to California,” begins illustrator and tattoo artist Elizabeth Lai, who goes by Ze. “But New York really started to feel like home, and we decided to do some cheeky viewings around town to just see what our options were.” About searching for the right home, Ze said, “We saw a couple places that were really disappointing, and so we really had no clue if buying in New York would be possible. And then we saw this space!” They immediately loved the long rectangular layout of the living room and dining room for it allowed Ze to use the far end of the space as her home tattoo studio and work bench. They hung a semi transparent ivory curtain from floor to ceiling to soften the space and provide privacy for her clients. The apartment is a perfect assortment of elegant Asian decor and furniture mixed playfully with mid-century modern shapes and pop art culture. The gold velvet couch and gold leaf screen behind the couch make the room glow with warmth and poetry. Biophilic elements within the home are important to Ze’s wellbeing and in establishing a sense of home for her– robust plantlife, earth-toned colors and natural textiles make her feel comfortable and open for inspiration. One of our favorite features that the couple has created is their cafe bar and treat menu which lives on the oversized coffee table. Their butter-colored espresso machine is used throughout the week for hosting, treating their guests to made-to-order black tea lattes and matcha lattes. Their best tip for keeping a client-ready home: make sure everything has its own proper space, so when it’s time to tidy up you know exactly where everything needs to be.
