By following these three simple steps—defining the planes, measuring the perspective, and applying the perspective—you’ll be able to tackle complex scenes and create drawings with depth, dimension, and accuracy. Define the Planes The first step in mastering perspective is understanding the concept of planes in your drawing. In simple terms, a "plane" is a flat surface within your composition, like the ground, a wall, or the side of a building. These planes help establish the structure of your scene and provide the foundation for how objects will be placed within the space. ________________________________________ 2. Measure the Perspective Once you've defined the planes, the next step is to measure the perspective. This means determining how the planes in your scene recede into the distance and establishing the vanishing points. The vanishing points are crucial to creating the illusion of depth in your drawing—they show where parallel lines converge as they get farther away. Start by identifying the horizon line, which represents your eye level. If you’re drawing a simple 1-point perspective, there will be a single vanishing point along this horizon line. Use a ruler or straightedge to measure the lines and angles that lead toward the vanishing points.
