In 2014, Morgan Geyser, then 12 years old, and her friend Anissa Weier lured their classmate, Payton “Bella” Leutner, into the woods in Waukesha, Wisconsin. The girls believed they needed to kill someone to appease “Slenderman,” a fictional online horror character, and prove their loyalty to him. The attack was premeditated: Geyser stabbed Payton 19 times with a kitchen knife while Weier reportedly encouraged her. Payton survived by crawling to a nearby roadside where a passing cyclist found her and called for help. Her survival was widely described as remarkable given the severity and locations of the wounds.
