Thesis: Our world is loud and annoying, our capacity for symbolic imagination is quietly being eroded. This video explores how we’ve lost the ritualized space to interface our conscious minds with the unconscious, and how a modern practice of....solo role-playing PERHAPS????...can help restore it. Also at the beginning of the video I flirt with the idea that this is also eroding our REM dreaming depth/vividness but the research just isn't there yet. COVID was weird bc people were actually dreaming more, but that will forever be an asterisk on public health type data and...well...dream collection data isn't a current "top priority" But anyway (lights dim as the video description revs up): I start with the modern condition: the outsourcing of imagination, the symbolic drought, the paved-over desert that Jung warned about. Then we shift to the historical/psychological context: how Jung confronted his own inner world in The Red Book (pretty much by locking himself in a room and going a bit tWiStEd, and also how he conceptualised the symbol as the bridge between known and unknown. We then discuss what a symbol really is (in simplified terms), how it functions in dreams and myth, and why our overstimulated cultures tend to block their emergence.
