The recent Reserve Bank of India (RBI) reform on External Commercial Borrowings (ECB) is a “landmark move” that will have “extremely positive long-term impact” on India’s growth story, says Renuka Ramnath, CEO of Multiples. She explained that the change gives Indian corporates a level playing field with their global peers by opening wider access to international debt markets. “What India needs is enormous debt for the kind of growth we have planned,” she said, adding that this reform will “play into that need extremely effectively.” Ramnath also highlighted that India’s fragmented corporate landscape—with over $7 trillion in listed and unlisted equity value—limits efficiency and competitiveness. She expects manufacturing and family-owned businesses to lead the next wave of consolidation, calling mergers and acquisitions a “must rather than a desire” for Indian companies to unlock value and scale sustainably. Joining the discussion, Srini Sriniwasan, MD of Kotak Alternate Asset Managers, called the RBI move a “1992 moment for the credit markets,” likening it to the liberalisation of India’s equity markets.
