It connects the canton of Uri, specifically the Reuss Valley near Altdorf, with the Linthal in the canton of Glarus, offering one of Switzerland's most spectacularly scenic alpine drives. Historically, the pass was not a major trade route but rather a cattle track dating back to Roman and medieval times. The current paved road, built primarily for strategic military reasons, was completed between 1893 and 1899. The route is renowned for its challenging and beautiful ascent, featuring numerous tight switchbacks, particularly on the Uri side. Highlights include the passage through Urnerboden, Switzerland's largest high alpine meadow, and breathtaking panoramic views of prominent peaks like the Tödi. Along the descent, travelers encounter dramatic waterfalls. The pass is also famous for the legendary Klausenrennen, a difficult pre-war hill climb race that ran between 1922 and 1934, drawing international motor racing attention. A memorial race for vintage vehicles is now held periodically.
