The BANNED American Beast That Britain Stole! The Jensen Interceptor SP is one of the most fascinating stories in British car history. Built in 1971 by a small factory in West Bromwich, England, it became the most powerful British car of its time. Jensen Motors, known for its craftsmanship and luxury, wanted to create a grand touring car that could compete with Ferrari, Lamborghini, and Aston Martin. To do that, they teamed up with Italian design house Carrozzeria Touring to design a car that looked as good as it performed. The result was the stunning Jensen Interceptor, famous for its sleek body and large curved rear window that doubled as a hatchback. But Jensen wanted more power, and in 1971 they built the Interceptor SP, a version that pushed performance to the limit. The “SP” stood for Six Pack, referring to its massive Chrysler 440 cubic inch V8 engine with three two barrel carburetors. This setup produced 385 horsepower and 490 pound feet of torque, making it more powerful than the Ferrari Daytona and Lamborghini Miura of the same era. The Six Pack system gave the car incredible acceleration and a thrilling surge of power when the extra carburetors kicked in. The SP could reach 60 miles per hour in just under seven seconds and had a top speed around 145 miles per hour, which was astonishing for a luxury grand tourer in the early 1970s. What made the SP even more unique was that its powerful American engine was actually illegal in the United States due to new emissions laws. Jensen had bought a limited stock of these engines before production ended, which meant only 232 cars could ever be built. Most were right hand drive for the British market, with just 13 made in left hand drive. The SP came with fine leather seats, air conditioning, and a handcrafted wooden dashboard, offering both comfort and performance. Sadly, timing was not on Jensen’s side. Just months after the SP’s production ended in 1973, the oil crisis hit, and demand for high performance cars collapsed. Jensen Motors closed in 1976. Today, around 150 to 180 SPs survive, making them very rare. Despite its incredible power and beauty, the SP remains undervalued compared to Italian exotics.
