On November 4, 1791, St. Clair's Defeat — also known as the Battle of the Wabash — took place near the Wabash River in present-day Ohio. A force of about 1,000 U.S. soldiers under Arthur St. Clair was decisively ambushed by a confederation of Native American tribes led by Little Turtle and Blue Jacket. The U.S. troops, poorly prepared and camped without proper defenses, were taken by surprise at dawn. The Native forces quickly encircled the camp, and within a few hours over 600 soldiers were killed and hundreds more wounded — marking the worst defeat suffered by the United States Army at the hands of Native Americans.
