Beside Castlevania, it is the namesake of the 2-Dimensional nonlinear platforming game genre. But since that’s a mouthful, everyone has taken to calling it “Metroidvania”. The series itself is heavily based on the film franchise “Alien”, Metroid is the story of a female protagonist in a powered suit moving across the galaxy, hunting down and eradicating the vile alien menace known as the metroids, a race of jellyfish-like parasites often used by pirates and even the government for various and nefarious reasons. As fun as this all sounds, the one thing the Metroid series has never been good at doing was keeping a coherent timeline of events as multiple games with multiple storylines crop up on a regular basis. So far, out of the 11 games in the franchise, the one considered to be “Metroid 5” is actually the most recent, with the upcoming Metroid Prime 4 being considered the seventh game in the franchise.
