Through all the different forms of state whether it's Russia or the Soviet Union, that region of the world has always been synonymous with chess. Today, 11 Russian players have held the title of world champion,they by far have the highest number of Grandmasters, and are undoubtedly the strongest chess country in existence, but all this success has not come without controversy. From multiple cheating scandals involving Russian players to political problems, Russia has been under the limelight for as long as they have been on top of chess and ultimately it may be the reason for their self implosion. Currently, Russia has not held the world title since 2007 and they seem to have lost their dominance in chess. Their players are in disagreement and they can’t even represent their own country in the current political state they are in. So how did all this happen?
