These are laws that govern the way personal data should be collected, processed and stored, with the aim of protecting people’s privacy. You will learn what is meant by personal data and sensitive personal data, also known as special category data. You will learn about the key principles of these laws, and the price to be paid for ignoring them. You will also learn about your rights if someone else is storing and processing data about you. The lesson begins with a discussion of the evolution of data protection laws in Europe including the Access to Personal Files Act, the Privacy and Electronic Communications Regulation (PECR), also known as the E privacy directive or the Cookie Law, and the UK GDPR.
