On August 28, 1990, at approximately 3:30 p.m. CDT, a devastating F5 tornado struck the communities of Plainfield, Crest Hill, and Joliet in north-eastern Illinois. The tornado carved a 16.4-mile path of destruction, ranging from 600 yards to half a mile in width. Tragically, 29 people lost their lives, and 350 others were injured. The storm obliterated 470 homes and damaged over 1,000 structures, including schools, churches, and businesses, resulting in an estimated $160 million in damages.
