Andreas Stihl was born in Zurich in 1896, studied mechanical engineering, survived the First World War, and went on to build the machine that ended 3,000 years of hand sawing. This is the full story of how he did it. Before Stihl, felling a tree meant two men, a hand saw, and days of brutal labor. Logs were hauled by hand to stationary sawmills. The saw never went to the tree. The tree always went to the saw. Nobody questioned it — until Stihl did. In 1926, working alone in a small Stuttgart workshop, he patented the world's first electric chainsaw. It weighed 64 kilograms and needed two people to operate. It was a starting point. Over the next four decades, Stihl refined, rebuilt, and relentlessly improved his machine through a global economic depression, a world war, Allied bombing raids, a three-year internment in a Bavarian labor camp, and a postwar rebuilding process that started with 80 workers and a damaged factory. In 1959, he released the Contra — a 12-kilogram, gearless, one-man chainsaw that increased forestry productivity by 200 percent and changed the industry forever. By 1971, STIHL was the largest chainsaw manufacturer in the world. It has held that position every year since.
