German fighters needed to intercept Allied bombers at 25,000 feet, but conventional aircraft struggled. Thin air reduced engine power and propeller efficiency simultaneously. The Luftwaffe needed 500+ mph—impossible with propellers.Willy Messerschmitt proposed the radical: abandon propellers entirely. BMW turbojets produced 1,750 pounds of thrust each—3,500 pounds total with no propeller efficiency losses.July 18, 1942: first pure jet flight. Performance was staggering—540 mph in level flight (100 mph faster than any Allied fighter), 3,900 feet/minute climb rate, 37,500-foot ceiling. The Me 262 could appear, attack, and disengage before enemy fighters reacted.Kommando Nowotny formed September 1944. Combat missions validated the design—Allied bomber crews reported attacks by aircraft moving faster than anything they'd encountered. But Germany's strategic situation had deteriorated. Approximately 1,400 manufactured, though fuel shortages and maintenance demands limited operations. Engines required overhauls every 10-25 hours.After Germany's surrender, Allied forces captured Me 262s and incorporated the technology. The F-86 Sabre featured 35-degree swept wings directly inspired by German research. Boeing's 707 used swept-wing concepts.
