Long before modern engine brakes, descending a steep mountain grade in a fully loaded semi-truck was one of the most dangerous situations a driver could face. Heavy trucks relied entirely on friction drum brakes, which converted motion into heat. On long downhill grades those brakes could overheat, leading to brake fade and the terrifying possibility of a runaway truck. In this video we explore the history of the Jake Brake, the revolutionary engine braking system that transformed diesel trucking safety and changed how heavy trucks descend mountain passes. The story begins with Clessie Cummins, the legendary diesel pioneer and founder of Cummins Engine Company. After a near-runaway experience on California’s Cajon Pass in 1931, Cummins began searching for a way to use the diesel engine itself as a braking system. The solution was ingenious: releasing compressed air at the top of the compression stroke so the engine absorbs energy instead of producing it. Working with Jacobs Manufacturing, this concept became the Jacobs Engine Brake, commonly known as the Jake Brake, first introduced on Cummins engines in 1961 and later adopted across Detroit Diesel, Caterpillar, Mack, and other heavy-duty diesel engines. Today the Jake Brake is one of the most important innovations in heavy truck engineering. By allowing the engine to slow the truck without overheating the service brakes, it dramatically reduced runaway truck accidents and changed mountain driving forever.
