Her life would soon change drastically. Born and raised in California, Lewinsky decided to study at Lewis and Clark College in Portland, Oregon where she graduated in May 1995 with a bachelor’s degree in psychology. Her move to Washington, D.C. resulted in working as an intern in the office of the White House under Chief of Staff Leon Panetta. She continued her career by accepting a job in the Office of Legislative Affairs at the Pentagon in 1996. There, she befriended colleague Linda Tripp, who she confided in about her affair with Clinton. During the summer of 1997, Lewinsky came forward to investigators, and the story eventually broke in January 1998. For nearly a year, the growing scandal was constantly scrutinized by the media. Clinton was eventually impeached by the House of Representatives in December 1998. “Overnight, I went from being a completely private figure to a publicly humiliated one,” Lewinsky said. In recent years, Lewinsky has stepped back into the spotlight to share her experience with cyberbullying. In 2015, she became an ambassador for the Bystander Revolution, an anti-bullying organization, and held a widely-viewed TED talk.
