In the past, when people asked where I was from, I’d proudly say the United States and be met with smiles, curiosity, and stories about friends or family who lived there. Today, the response is often, “I’m sorry for what happened to your country.” What changed? Once upon a time, the world’s idea of America came from Hollywood. In the movies, everyone had big houses, nice cars, and opportunities. Now, that image has been replaced by headlines, viral videos, and chaos on social media. Mass shootings, political extremism, collapsing healthcare, and economic tension. The world is watching, and it’s changing how they see us. In this video, I dive into how America’s global reputation has evolved from cultural leader to cautionary tale. I explore why U.S. soft power has declined, how American pop culture has lost its influence, and how current politics are reshaping how the world treats Americans abroad. I still love my country deeply. But as an American traveling overseas in 2025, it’s impossible to ignore that the shine has faded and that people everywhere are starting to look at the United States differently.
