If you miss the opponent's threat even for a single move, you can lose any position. This shows the fundamental importance of always checking for enemy threats every single move. This process is automatized for Magnus Carlsen, but I witnessed this is not the case for most casual players. Let's do a thought experiment. You can remove one chess skill from Magnus Carlsen for a single move during a game. What skill would that be if you wanted to maximize your winning chances against him? I think the answer is the ability to check for threats. This video talks about how people miss threats when the opponent's last move is a defensive-looking move or an escape against our attack. What I witnessed as a coach is that people have a hard time perceiving the threats behind such "defensive-looking" moves and they perceive those moves as uni-dimensional. But regardless of the surface appearances, we should always ask ourselves what would the opponent do if we simply did not make a move right now.
