Roland Freisler remains one of the most infamous figures in WW2 history, a man whose name is inseparable from the brutal judiciary of Nazi Germany. Serving first as State Secretary in the Reich Ministry of Justice and later as president of the notorious People’s Court, Freisler became Adolf Hitler’s most feared judge. Nearly every defendant brought before him during World War 2 faced a predetermined guilty verdict, and more than 2,200 people were sentenced to death under his authority. Among his victims were the young members of the White Rose resistance, including Sophie and Hans Scholl, as well as Christoph Probst. Arrested for distributing anti-Nazi leaflets, the trio was dragged into Freisler’s courtroom in February 1943. In a trial that lasted minutes, Freisler screamed accusations of treason and sentenced them to death by beheading. Their execution was carried out the same day. Freisler’s cruelty reached new extremes after the failed July 20th assassination attempt on Adolf Hitler, better known as Operation Valkyrie. In August 1944, he presided over the show trials of the conspirators—military officers, diplomats, statesmen—whose proceedings were filmed for Nazi propaganda. Footage shows Freisler alternating between icy interrogation and theatrically enraged abuse, berating defendants before sentencing nearly all of them to death by hanging. Many were executed within two hours of their verdict.
