Despite what the memes may make it out to be this was a thought out design which resulted in a vehicle which could go head to head with just about anything the Germans threw at it. This tank had so much success in its role that it actively needed to disguise itself as a standard Sherman to keep from being targeted, not something you can say about many other vehicles.
