Etsy really wants you to think that constantly changing your SEO will make your listings rank higher in search, but this is an example of how a different factor comes into play, and probably has the most weight of anything in ranking. Keywords are important at first, but then activity on the listing changes things. A sidenote...After I took this listing down I relisted the same thing but I didn't tell anyone. After some time it showed up on the first page of search results for the niche event filtered searches, but way down at the bottom of the page, and it never reached the top. At the beginning of the process Etsy uses your keywords and tries out your listings, but if they don't sell they don't move up, and if nobody ever looks at them they'll move down in the search results. The listing I looked at popped up to the top because it was selling, and the listing that got no attention faded away. I was using incognito mode the entire time that I was watching the original listing moving around after posting it, that would be all day Saturday and Sunday. By Sunday it had "stuck" at the top of the search results for the terms I was looking at, which included long tail and short tail versions of the "table number" title. I was opening and closing different incognito windows using different desktop browsers, plus the phone app, so that I could check to see if the placement was consistent across devices. And I never clicked on the listing at all, I just looked to see where it was. I don't use tools to check the placement because looking with my own eyes was accurate enough! You can't 100% do a completely clean test of anything on Etsy because you can't control all of the variables, but this was consistent enough across all browsers and devices to tell me that I could reliably report it.
