Revelation 13:16-18 He causes all, both small and great, rich and poor, free and slave, to receive a mark on their right hand or on their foreheads, and that no one may buy or sell except one who has the mark or the name of the beast, or the number of his name. Here is wisdom. Let him who has understanding calculate the number of the beast, for it is the number of a man: His number is 666. Whatever the mark of the beast is, it must be his mark, not from some other source. Now notice once again the importance of his mark—you will not be able to buy or sell without this mark. But the Bible gives a very good reason NOT to receive it. Revelation 14:9-10 Then a third angel followed them, saying with a loud voice, “If anyone worships the beast and his image, and receives his mark on his forehead or on his hand, he himself shall also drink of the wine of the wrath of God, which is poured out full strength into the cup of His indignation. He shall be tormented with fire and brimstone in the presence of the holy angels and in the presence of the Lamb.” The wrath of God—why? Why is God so angry with those who receive this mark? Without it, one will be prohibited from buying and selling. Yet, taking it brings upon you God's wrath. Other scriptures explain to whom God’s wrath is directed—the disobedient. Romans 2:5 But in accordance with your hardness and your impenitent heart you are treasuring up for yourself wrath in the day of wrath and revelation of the righteous judgment of God. Colossians 3:5-6 Therefore put to death your members which are on the earth: fornication, uncleanness, passion, evil desire, and covetousness, which is idolatry. Because of these things the wrath of God is coming upon the sons of disobedience. The flip side: True Christians who reject the mark are rewarded. Revelation 15:2 Those who have the victory over the beast, over his image and over his mark and over the number of his name, standing on the sea of glass, having harps of God. Whatever it is, it's a mark of disobedience to God, associated with the beast and religious system that rides the beast. The Beast has a long history with several revivals; book of Daniel pictures 4 Gentile empires arising, beginning in Babylon and ending at Christ's return. Daniel describes King Nebuchadnezzar's dream of a giant image of a man in Daniel 2:32-40, picturing the 4 kingdoms: 1) Chaldean Empire of Nebuchadnezzar 2) Medo-Persian 3) Greco-Macedonian Empire 4) Roman Empire Daniel 7 and 8 give amazingly accurate details regarding these empires. Revelation 13, written during the time of Rome, then details the future of the Roman Empire. Revelation 17 sees the Empire ruled by a great religious system—hence the term, the Holy Roman Empire; this Roman system has 7 revivals while ridden by an immoral woman (prophetically a woman is a church). This union between church and state continues to the Second Coming—even fighting against Christ at His return. Read about the 7th and final revival of this Beast in Revelation 17:12-14. The ten horns which you saw are ten kings who have received no kingdom as yet, but they receive authority for one hour as kings with the beast. These are of one mind, and they will give their power and authority to the beast. These will make war with the Lamb, and the Lamb will overcome them, for He is Lord of lords and King of kings. The reference to the Beast applies to both a man and a kingdom. When you read Daniel 2, 7, and 8, along with Revelation 13 and 17, can there be any doubt as to its identity? It is none other than the Roman Empire.
