Video Description

Welcome back to Sunday Morning and the Old Cookbook Show! Today, we're baking a 1930s Raisin Brown Bread from Golden Jubilee Recipes (1886–1936), a vintage community church cookbook published in Ontario in 1937. This recipe comes from a fascinating era—just after the Great Depression and on the edge of World War II—when Canadian kitchens were starting to open up again while still holding on to frugality and tradition. This quick bread recipe is full of history and heart. Made with brown sugar, sour milk (buttermilk), sour cream, raisins, and nuts, it strikes a balance between simplicity and comfort. Think of it as a healthy bran muffin in loaf form—perfect for breakfast, tea time, or toasting with a pat of butter. We explore what makes this recipe special, the historical context behind it, and how to adapt it for your kitchen today. No yeast required—just classic pantry ingredients and a nod to the cooks who weathered the 1930s. 👇 Comment below if your family made a version of this bread—or if you remember a similar one from your grandma’s kitchen! 📚 Featured Cookbook: Golden Jubilee Recipes (Poplar Hill Church of Christ, Ontario, 1937) ✈️ Supporting Hope Air: Learn more below about our 2025 cross-Canada flight for charity through Give Hope Wings. #VintageRecipes #OldCookbookShow #QuickBread #CanadianRecipes #RaisinBread #1930sRecipes #DepressionEraCooking #ChurchCookbook #OntarioHistory #ClassicBaking #BranLoaf #HeritageCooking #BakingWithHistory #CookbookReview #HopeAir #GiveHopeWings RAISIN BROWN BREAD RECIPE: 2 cups white flour, 1 teaspoon salt, 1 cup brown sugar, 1 egg, 2 cups bran, 1 cup sour milk, 1 cup sour cream, 1½ level teaspoons baking soda, 2 teaspoons baking powder.
