This 100-Year-Old Ruin Got a Jaw-Dropping Makeover – See It to Believe It! ----------------------------------------------- Today, we’re teaming up with 99 Projects to revive an abandoned cabin that’s seen better days. This isn’t your typical DIY project—imagine a forgotten relic battered by time, with rotting walls and a roof that’s taken a beating from endless rain and wind. Our journey began by assessing the cabin’s structural integrity. The foundation had suffered greatly from moisture infiltration, leading to rotting beams and crumbling stone. Every problem—from weakened support beams to a deteriorated retaining wall—was meticulously mapped out so we could prioritize urgent repairs. Next, we tackled the frame. Parts of the load-bearing walls were in such poor condition that we had to remove damaged panels, insulation, and decayed wooden studs. Heavy-duty equipment, including a small excavator, cleared away years of built-up dirt and debris, revealing the true extent of the damage. With the affected areas marked, we poured high-strength concrete reinforced with rebar into the foundation’s weak spots, creating a robust new base for the cabin. Attention then turned to the interior. The original floor had deteriorated from rot and moisture, so instead of patching up visible damage, we removed the entire floor. This allowed us to inspect and modernize the underlying supports. Using hydraulic jacks, we gently lifted sagging sections, installed shoring beams, and reinforced the lower structure with pressure-treated wooden beams and heavy-duty engineered joists. We then laid OSB boards as a subfloor—a cost-effective, strong solution that provides lasting stability. For the walls, we used high-quality kiln-dried lumber to frame new sections. We employed a “sistering” technique by placing fresh beams alongside weakened ones, boosting overall stability. Angled supports connected the ceiling joists to the wall frames, ensuring everything was perfectly squared and aligned. Roof repairs were just as critical. Additional beams were installed to shore up weak spots, and an OSB sublayer was laid down to support a new corrugated metal roof—chosen for its durability and resistance to extreme weather. To further stabilize the foundation, rebar was strategically set in a grid, then encased in layers of concrete to eliminate air pockets and provide extra strength. Utility upgrades followed, with a proper drainage system installed around the foundation to redirect water away from the cabin. New window frames were carefully fitted with water-resistant barriers and sealed with insulation to prevent drafts. Finally, the interior received a fresh, rustic look with wood paneling that adds warmth and charm, while the driveway was cleared and smoothed for an inviting entrance. This transformation—from a dilapidated, forgotten cabin to a safe, functional, and beautiful home—is a testament to careful planning and skilled craftsmanship.
