Yes, even if he has a preference for choosing off the beaten path projects with characters who are far from average, it’s hard to look at him and not see a complete and utter mainstream star. Of course, it does help Viggo’s case here that he was in one of the biggest and most successful movie trilogies of all time, with his performance as Aragon in The Lord of the Rings trilogy rightfully earning him universal acclaim. And since then he’s continued to periodically dip his toe into the world of crowd pleasing hits like 2018’s Green Book. That said, his main focus remains more art house fare like that found in Eastern Promises, A History of Violence, The Road, and Captain Fantastic, with each of these arguably showing him at his best. Even the world of directing has recently opened up to Viggo Mortensen as since 2020 he’s made two films of his own, Falling, and The Dead Don’t Hurt, with a third on the way at some point in the future.
