President Trump announced what he’s calling the “tariff dividend,” which is essentially the return of stimulus checks. The headline number is at least $2,000 per American, and roughly 85 percent of U.S. adults would qualify based on the same income cutoffs used back in 2021. That’s potentially more than $400 billion being handed out, all as the United States is closing in on $40 trillion of national debt. As someone who has been studying this stuff for a long time, here’s what I want you to pay attention to. If you look at the last round of stimulus in 2021, the full $1,400 payments went to single filers making up to $75,000, heads of household up to $112,500, and married couples up to $150,000. If those same thresholds apply today, about 220 million adults fit that criteria. Multiply that by $2,000 and you get $440 billion. Trump even said “at least” $2,000, so this number could end up being larger. The timing makes this even more interesting. The wealth gap is at record highs. In the second quarter of 2025, the top 10 percent of earners were responsible for almost half of all U.S. consumer spending. That’s the highest share since 1989. So the argument is that a fresh round of stimulus boosts spending for the bottom 90 percent and juices short-term GDP. On paper that sounds great, but as we saw in 2021, the short-term sugar high leads to a long-term hangover. After the last round of stimulus, inflation didn’t just tick up; it ran nearly to 10 percent. Inflation has come down over the past couple of years, but it’s already drifting higher again, sitting around 3 percent today. Now layer on rate cuts from the Federal Reserve, stock markets brushing up against all-time highs, and hundreds of billions of dollars in new spending power hitting the system. This is gasoline on an already warm fire. There is also the question of how this gets paid for. The administration says tariff revenue will cover these dividends and whatever remains will go toward paying down the national debt. The problem is that the math simply does not add up. In August, the government collected $30 billion in tariff revenue. That same month, the federal deficit was $345 billion. Tariffs covered roughly 10 percent of what we overspent in that single month. Since October alone, the debt has grown by another $600 billion. We’re approaching $40 trillion, and we’ve added $10 trillion in just five years. That is not sustainable, regardless of how politicians try to dress it up. Meanwhile, markets continue to love liquidity. The S&P 500 is only a few percent off all-time highs and up more than 35 percent since the April bottom. Tech companies are spending close to $200 billion per quarter on AI-related capital expenditures. Whether this is a bubble or not depends on who you ask, but there is no denying that easy money fuels asset prices. The bigger picture is that these stimulus payments almost always act like an involuntary tax. You may receive $2,000 today, but you end up paying far more over the long run through higher prices on everything from food to housing to energy. That is why I always hammer the same message: own assets. Inflation punishes savers and rewards owners. Stocks, real estate, Bitcoin, productive land, and income-producing businesses are the tools that help you outrun the silent tax of inflation.
