Questo tipo di onde è alla base della scoperta della meccanica quantistica, effettuata da Max Planck nell'anno 1900. Grazie alla ipotesi quantistica, si cominciò a capire che a livello microscopico l'energia è quantizzata, ovvero si presenta a pacchetti, che oggi chiamiamo "fotoni di luce".
