In a bid to arrest the Venezuelan president, the US tried to recruit Nicolas Maduro’s personal pilot to secretly fly him to a place where he could be nabbed. The daring plan was hatched by former Homeland Security Investigations (HSI) agent Edwin Lopez in April 2024, as per an Associated Press report. US federal agent Edwin Lopez attempted to recruit Maduro's chief pilot, General Bitner Villegas, to divert Maduro's plane for his arrest, the report said. Villegas, a member of the Venezuelan air force and Maduro’s elite honour guard, had transported the socialist leader to countries like Iran, Cuba, and Russia. In a scene out of a spy thriller, Lopez met with Villegas at an airport hangar, where the pilot was surreptitiously recorded. The pilot was promised riches if he could deliver Maduro to US federal law enforcement, the AP report noted. Villegas left the hangar without striking a deal with the feds, but he left his phone number before going back to Venezuela.
