Valley of the Kings: Exploring Tutankhamun's Tomb | Luxor Egypt We're in Egypt for todays walking tour and it's an extra special look around The Valley Of The Kings, with an unmissable look inside the tomb of Tutankhamun. Come with me around this famous Luxor tourist attraction and huge historical site. Let's go see King Tut! The Valley of the Kings, also known as the Valley of the Gates of the Kings, is a secluded valley in Egypt where the pharaohs and powerful nobles of the New Kingdom were buried for nearly 500 years, from the 16th to the 11th centuries BC. It is located on the west bank of the Nile River, opposite the city of Luxor, and is part of the Theban Necropolis, a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Why was the Valley of the Kings chosen as a burial place? During the New Kingdom, the ancient Egyptians abandoned the practice of building pyramids as tombs for their pharaohs. Instead, they sought more hidden and secure locations to protect the pharaohs' bodies and treasures from grave robbers. The Valley of the Kings, with its remote and isolated location, provided the perfect setting for these hidden tombs. What can be found in the Valley of the Kings? The valley contains over 60 known tombs, each carved deep into the rock face. These tombs vary in size and complexity, ranging from single-chambered burials to massive complexes spanning several thousand square meters. Many of the tombs are adorned with intricate hieroglyphic carvings and vivid painted decorations, depicting scenes from Egyptian mythology, religious beliefs, and daily life. Some of the most famous tombs in the Valley of the Kings include: Tutankhamun's Tomb: This relatively small tomb is famous for its intact burial chamber, filled with treasures and artifacts that offer a glimpse into the life and times of the young pharaoh. Ramses VI's Tomb: This large and well-preserved tomb features stunning paintings and reliefs depicting scenes from the Book of the Dead and other religious texts. The Tomb of Seti I: This magnificent tomb is known for its long corridor adorned with colorful reliefs and its grand hypostyle hall, supported by massive pillars. Visiting the Valley of the Kings The Valley of the Kings is a popular tourist destination, attracting millions of visitors each year. Tourists can visit several of the tombs, including Tutankhamun's tomb, Ramses VI's tomb, and the tomb of Seti I. However, due to the fragility of the tombs, access is often restricted and photography is limited. The Valley of the Kings is a remarkable archaeological site that offers a unique window into the lives and beliefs of the ancient Egyptian pharaohs. Its hidden tombs, adorned with intricate carvings and vivid paintings, continue to fascinate and inspire visitors from around the world. I hope you enjoyed this Egypt walking tour.
