Violence broke out in the Northern Irish town of Ballymena on Monday night, June 9, as protesters gathered following the alleged sexual assault of a teenage girl over the weekend. The disruption followed a demonstration close to the Clonavon Terrace area of the town, where the girl was allegedly assaulted. Two 14-year-old boys from Romania were arrested and charged with attempted rape before appearing at Coleraine Magistrates’ Court on Monday morning. According to the Belfast Telegraph, people had initially gathered to support the girl’s family. Later in the evening, however, several houses were attacked by masked youths, who were seen kicking in doors and throwing missiles at windows. Footage captured by Christopher Shaw and shared on social media shows a fire burning. The PSNI said they were “dealing with public disorder in Ballymena town centre” on Monday evening. “Missiles have been thrown toward police, with damage reported to properties. Avoid the Clonavon Road area until further notice,” the PSNI wrote, appealing for calm.
