Hiding deep within the Führerbunker, an increasingly ill and delusional Adolf Hitler, shortly after his marriage, signed his final will—a document of virulent malice and a testament to his hateful ideology. By the start of 1945, the axis powers were on the brink of total collapse. Faced with inevitable defeat, they responded not with pragmatism but with desperation, determined to do everything in their power to slow the Allied advance and turn the tide of the war. It was against this backdrop that they turned to ever more extreme tactics and weapons, a final gamble in a conflict spiralling out of control. 80 years since the end of the second world war, the Imperial War Museum London is home to over one million artefacts relating to war and conflict including a handful that offer unique insights into those final desperate days.
