In this 12-minute episode of American Time Machine, we drop into a single imagined day in 1970s NYC to see what life actually felt like from the inside: waking up in cramped apartments in near-bankrupt neighborhoods, walking through streets piled with garbage and neon signs, riding graffiti-covered subways that were loud, unreliable, and a little terrifying, and learning the unwritten rules that kept you safe after dark. We move through the South Bronx, Harlem, downtown Manhattan, Brooklyn and Queens, where crime, fires and the 1977 blackout are part of the background—but so are block parties, corner delis, disco clubs, punk basements, early hip-hop, and tight-knit communities that refused to give up on the city. For the people who lived it, 1970s New York was a place where decay and creativity grew side by side, and where danger and possibility were never more than a block apart.
