The Black Sea's unique anoxic depths (below 150 meters) preserve ancient shipwrecks, creating a "dead zone" free of oxygen and life like shipworms. Researchers locate and study remarkably preserved Ottoman-era shipwrecks (circa 300 years old), complete with intact carvings, ropes, and artefacts.
